The political and economic stagnation that characterized Israel in the 1980s was reflected in a series of crises: the Lebanon War that broke out in 1982 and lasted well beyond the end of the decade; the first intifada that broke out in 1987; rising inflation; and inconclusive elections that led to a series of national unity governments – which were only an intermediate stage in the broader political change that began with the upheaval of 1977. This oppressive atmosphere made Israel’s youth fertile ground for the anti-establishment punk culture that developed in the Anglo-Saxon world in the mid-1970s. They absorbed the spirit of rebellion and the musical roughness of punk and assimilated them into the genres of their time, which had already developed beyond basic punk to post-punk, new wave and their various versions.
